Pueblo Del Rio Participates in Neighborhood Health Day

Cedars Sinai Medical Center in partnership with the Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles (HACLA) and COACH for Kids hosted a Neighborhood Health Day at Pueblo del Rio community to promote healthy living and offer free health screenings for the residents.

Representatives from the following organizations attended the Health Day: Los Angeles Christian Health Centers, Cedars Sinai, Watts Counseling & Learning Center, Watts Health, Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Hospital and Coach for Kids. In order to be entered in a special drawing for gift cards and giveaways, residents had to visit each partner booth to obtain a free screening or a medical advice from clinicians.

Residents were able to take advantage of such free services as: weight/height and body measurements, body fat screenings, blood pressure screenings, adult immunizations, dental screenings, and glucose screenings. Parents learned about baby bottle-related tooth decay, obtained information about how to maintain healthy glucose and blood pressure levels and received Hepatitis A vaccines. Residents also received helpful tips on nutrition, dental hygiene and importance of exercise.

HACLA Watts/LA WorkSource Center staff and Leah Gasser-Ordaz, Children’s Rights Attorney for Public Counsel, attended the event to jumpstart the HACLA-Public Counsel partnership within the HUD- and Department of Justice-sponsored Juvenile Reentry Assistance Program (JRAP). The JRAP team introduced the program to Pueblo del Rio residents so they can access free services to expunge non-violent crimes from the records of sons and daughters or themselves, between ages 14 and 24 years old. By clearing or sealing their criminal records, canceling traffic tickets and other legal remedies, residents of HACLA developments and Section 8 participants can rejoin the workforce, finish their diploma and live legally and openly in HACLA units and federally subsidized housing. All information exchanged between Public Counsel and residents falls under attorney-client privilege and will not be shared with other parties.  For more details, please leave a message with Public Counsel at 213-385-2977, ext. 502.
