HACLA Joins with Everytable and Community Partners in Grassroots Effort to Deliver 62,000+ Free Meals to Homebound Seniors

In response to stay-at-home orders in the wake of the Coronavirus pandemic, the Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles (HACLA) has partnered with Everytable, a local mission-driven food company, and several Los Angeles City Councilmembers to fund and organize the delivery of fresh, nutritious food to the homes of vulnerable residents living in public housing sites.

Since Governor Gavin Newsom first announced significant steps to limit the spread of COVID-19, including the isolation at home of all residents 65 years and older, seniors quickly became the most at-risk population for food insecurity. Even before the COVID-19 crisis, the LA County Department of Public Health reports that over half a million seniors faced food insecurity. Many seniors are now struggling to find affordable food delivery options. This effort and partnership seeks to fill that gap. “Our mission has always been about access - making sure everyone, everywhere had access to healthy, fresh food at affordable prices,” said Everytbale founder and CEO, Sam Polk.

Collectively, the effort will provide more than 62,000 ready-to-eat meals to 2,000+ seniors and people with disabilities over the next two months, with that number expected to increase as partnerships expand. Special thanks to Los Angeles Councilmembers Joe Buscaino (CD 15), Jose Huizar (CD 14), Mike Bonin (CD 11) and Curren Price (CD 9) for their partnership!

“The Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles is proud to partner with Everytable, the Council District offices and other local partners to provide healthy meal options to the most vulnerable of our already vulnerable population. We take pride in being able to bring some sense of comfort in these challenging and uncertain times,” said HACLA President & CEO Doug Guthrie.
