Imperial Courts Hosts Star View Health and Resource Fair

Over 100 non-profits, health and community organizations participated in Stars Behavioral Health Group’s Annual Resource Fair held at the Imperial Courts public housing development. The collaborative event sponsored by Red Eye and Starts Behavioral Health Group, featured a carnival theme which attracted nearly 2,000 Imperial Courts and Watts community residents.

The Resource Fair provided a myriad of resources and entertainment for visitors of all ages. The fair included free health testing and screenings, vaccines, free dental exams, clothing, raffle giveaway, free haircuts, live performances and much more. Children enjoyed a rock climbing wall, car rides, arts and crafts stations as well as carnival style game booths. Free snacks, beverages, shaved ice, and food were in abundance.

44th District Congresswoman Nanette Barragán, addressed the guests and distributed Certificates of Congressional Recognition to event organizers. The Congresswoman also interacted with residents and was even seen standing in line with children waiting for a cone of shaved ice which provided a much needed relief on a sweltering day.

During the Resource Fair, the Housing Authority of the City of Los Angles’ (HACLA) non-profit organization Kids Progress, Inc. (KPI) distributed over 300 backpacks donated by Baby2Baby and 1,300 books donated by The National Book Foundation through their Book Rich Environment (BRE) initiative. In total, the National Book Foundation donated over 35,000 books to HACLA that are going to be distributed to the youth from all 14 public housing development throughout the year. The giveaways were headlined by celebrity actor and author B.J. Novak, who did a special reading of his new book “The Book with No Pictures”. B.J. graciously interacted with the children and adults, posed for photos, and gave away 100 autographed copies of his book.

The Los Angeles City and County Public Libraries were also on hand to promote early literacy and registered dozens of youth for library cards.
