Section 3 Resident Story: Meet Nicolas

Nicolas Vergara enjoys working in the construction industry and has spent the last ten years developing carpentry, cabinetry and basic electrical trade skills. The opportunity to work as a Roofer with Cal Roofing Inc. was a bit unexpected as he possessed no prior roofing experience. However, Nicolas says he is thankful for the opportunity to work with a team that has been supportive and spared no effort to mentor and teach him.

Nicolas grew up at Rancho San Pedro public housing community and lives there with his mother. He hopes that through this project and training he can secure a permanent position. Nicolas’ immediate goals are to have a reliable source of income to support his mother and to eventually move out of public housing.

“My cousin was struggling just like me and today he is doing great because of his hard work,” explains Nicolas. That cousin and several members from his church have become mentors to Nicolas.

After completing his project with Cal Roofing, Nicolas was hired by the TTS Engineering to work on Jordan Downs Phase 1C Redevelopment Retail Project in Watts. Nicolas has been working at the Jordan Downs Redevelopment site since September in sewer and pipeline trades.
