HACLA and HACoLA Host 2015 NAHRO Conference and Exhibition

The Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles (HACLA) and Housing Authority of the County of Los Angeles (HACoLA) co-hosted the 2015 National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials (NAHRO) National Conference & Exhibition at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, U.S. Congresswoman Maxine Waters addressed the attendees and addressed the important work of all those who are working to provide affordable housing across the nation. The last NAHRO conference held in Los Angeles was 40 years ago, in 1975. Over 40 HACLA employees volunteered for the conference.

HACLA and HACoLA offered two tours: Affordable Urban Communities Tour and The Hollywood Experience – Affordable Housing Tour. Participants of these tours were able to see how HACLA and HACoLA are using innovative designs to transform affordable housing communities and help families transition out of homelessness and poverty by providing various on-site supportive services and programs. Tour participants also visited several iconic Hollywood locations as well as properties that house formerly homeless individuals, seniors and individuals with mental disabilities.

HACLA staff participated in  a variety of sessions and seminars covering such topics as: Watts – 50 Years After the Rebellion; Building Safer Communities; Housing Authority Collaborations that Support Improved Educational Outcomes for Participants; Expanding Housing Opportunities for Homeless High Acuity Clients through Partnerships with County Health Departments; Breaking the Cycle of Incarceration and Homelessness: The Pilot Re-Entry Program; and Improving Resident Self-Sufficiency through Partnerships, Section 3, and Workforce Development.

Former basketball superstar Magic Johnson was a keynote speaker at the NAHRO Conference. In his speech, Mr. Johnson highlighted the importance of bringing services to urban undeserved areas and talked about his humble beginnings and the path to his successful business ventures post his NBA career.
