Nickerson Gardens Residents Participate in HD Supply Training Class

June 28, 2016 - Twenty youth from Nickerson Gardens public housing community participated in HD Supply’s Safety on Site training prior to starting their summer employments. Trainees learned about safety procedures at work, risk management and other areas that are equally important at workplace and around home. In addition, youth were given career opportunities examples in those fields, such as inspectors, CPR instructors, facilities maintenance, risk assessment, etc. Youth will also be receiving Financial Literacy training and attend workshops designed to prepare them enter the workforce and transition into building successful careers.

HD Supply makes these classes available to HACLA’s Section 3 Residents for free as part of meeting its obligations under the Section 3 Program. This was the fifth training class conducted for HACLA public housing residents since a contract was executed with HD Supply less than two years ago. A total of fifty eight (58) residents have received trainings to date.

HD Supply’s training classes are structured to help residents qualify for inspection, maintenance and safety job opportunities in both the public and the private business sector, including at HD Supply. The Housing Authority requires its contractors to demonstrate good faith efforts and comply with the Section 3 provision of Housing and Urban Development’s Act of 1968, which requires that economic opportunities generated by certain HUD financial assistance shall, to the greatest extent feasible be directed to low income persons, particularly those who are recipients of government assistance for housing, and to businesses which provide economic opportunities to low-income persons.

Section 3 Residents are encouraged to enroll in HACLA’s Section 3 Resident Registry to learn of training and job opportunities available to them via the Section 3 Program.
