Grand Opening of Pueblo Del Rio's

The youth at Pueblo Del Rio have a new way to explore the love of reading thanks to a generous donation from the LAPD Police Athletic & Activities League (PAAL). Housing Authority staff, along with PAAL and residents of the community cut the ribbon to announce the grand opening of Pueblo Del Rio's Little Free Library at the Alba Center. The Little Free Library is a library on wheels that offers books to people of all ages. The purpose of Little Free Library is to promote literacy and passion for education and learning in which community members while building a sense of community.

Captain Edward Prokop, Commander of Newton Police Station, fell in love with the idea of a Little Free Library after hearing about it from a neighboring division. “The goal at Newton Area Police Station is the preservation of the innocence of our youth, and I feel Little Free Library is a good way to keep youngsters grounded to what’s important in life,” Captain Prokop said.

The Little Free Librarywas built by Doug and Jean Chadwick, whose love of kids and their community, inspired them to volunteer their time to a great cause. Thanks to the funding from Millie Lieto, Senior Director of Accounting of Fandango; the book donations from Robin Keefe, President of BookEnds; and the partnership with Sanford Riggs, Director of Housing Services of the Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles, this project is another way to highlight the importance of early literacy.

“Had it not been for the support from all nonprofits and volunteers, the LAPD PAAL would not have been able to serve 550 children in this program,” Captain Prokop said.
